How to Track Your Fertility Signs (Without Overwhelm)
Tracking fertility signs can feel intimidating at first. Many people worry they’ll “do it wrong” or feel overwhelmed by numbers, thermometers, and by trying to interpret their cervical mucus. But fertility awareness is not about perfection — it’s about curiosity, self-awareness, and care.
If you’ve read the Beginner’s Guide to Fertility Awareness and Understanding the Four Phases of the Menstrual Cycle, you already know what fertility awareness is and how your cycle works. Now, let’s explore practical steps to track your signs without stress, so you can feel confident, empowered, and safe in your own body.
Step 1: Know the Fertility Signs
Fertility awareness relies on three main biological signs:
- Cervical Mucus
Observe texture, color, and stretchiness.
The closer to ovulation, the clearer and stretchier the mucus is (”egg white”).
After ovulation until your next menstruation, you will likely see dry days (no mucus). - Basal Body Temperature (BBT)
Take your temperature first thing in the morning, before getting out of bed.
After ovulation, BBT rises slightly due to progesterone.
You should be able to see a clear thermal shift—a group of pre-ovulatory temperatures that are lower than a group of post-ovulatory temperatures. - Cervical Position
The cervix changes in tilt, height, softness, and openness throughout the cycle.
Fertile days tend to feature a higher, softer, straight, and more open cervix.
Secondary signs include mood patterns, breast tenderness, libido, ovulation pain, among others.
Step 2: Choose your Tracking Method (and Gear)
- Thermometer: You will need a basal thermometer that measures two decimal places (i.e. 36.37°C instead of 36.4°C). I like this one because it keeps the last 30 temps logged.
- Chart:
- Paper chart: I recommend Lisa Hendrickson-Jack’s Fertility Awareness Mastery Charting Workbook. It has great instructions and a year’s worth of charting pages.
- App: Stay away from any apps that use automatic predictions. Prefer those who don’t sell your data to third parties. I’ll always recommend Read Your Body. It’s the most customizable and completely private apps of all.
Step 3: Observe Daily, Consistently
- Consistency is key. Slowly create the habit of taking your waking temperature, checking the toilet paper for mucus, and checking your cervix in the shower.
- Try to take your temperatures roughly around the same time every day.
- Check your mucus at least 4 times a day when you go to the toilet.
Step 4: Interpret Your Observations
- Look for patterns in cervical mucus, temperature shifts, and the position of the cervix.
- Identify whether you are ovulating, around what day of the cycle, and how long your luteal phase is.
- Check if other secondary signs help confirm your interpretation.
Step 5: Use the Data to Achieve Your Goals
- For avoiding pregnancy: Use barrier methods or abstain during fertile days. Caution: I do not recommend using fertility awareness for contraception without proper education and assistance of a trained educator.
- For trying to conceive: Focus intercourse on the days leading up to ovulation, especially on your mucus days.
- For monitoring health: Use the charts to spot irregularities and share data with a healthcare provider or your fertility awareness coach.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Inconsistent observations or skipping days. (”I think I didn’t have any mucus yesterday, but I didn’t actually check”)
- Relying solely on apps predictions without observing real signs or using an evidence-base effective method. (”My app said I’m not fertile today, so I think I’m good”)
- Comparing yourself to others’ cycles. (”My friend only opens her fertile window when she sees mucus”)
- Becoming over-confident and relying on assumptions. (”I always ovulate on cycle day 14”).

Tracking fertility is a long-term journey that requires consistency day after day. Although it might feel boring, confusing or frustrating at first, it pays off once you track your first full cycle. Looking at your monthly health report and understanding what happened on each day of your cycle feels very rewarding and encourages you to keep going.
